Unit 1 : Plague Laboratory
 
Routine activities undertaken
 
  1. Co-ordination of anti-plague activities with special emphasis on surveillance of the plague control units of the endemic states and ports of entry in the country.
  2. Carrying out bacteriological and serological examination of rodent organs and sera collected from man, wild and domestic rodents and other animals for the evidence of Y.pestis activity.
  3. Carrying out investigations of any suspected outbreak of plague.
  4. Identifying all the supected Y.pestis like organisms isolated from the field specimens.
  5. Keeping the Government of India and State Governments informed regarding plague Surveillance and Control activities in the country.
  6. Arranging training courses on plague surveillance/control methods for State Health Personnels.
  7. Maintenance of the Strains.

Unit 2 and 3 : Leishmania Laboratory & Toxoplasma Laboratory
 
Routine activities undertaken
 

Leishmania Laboratory

  1. Provided diagnostic services to hospitals and dispensaries in Delhi
  2. Isolation, cryopreservation and maintenance of Leishmania strains.
  3. Preparation of antigen for all serological procedures.
  4. Supply of antigen on demand to other laboratories in India as well as to other neighbouring countries.
  5. Supply of L.donovani strains to other laboratories on demand.
  6. Provided consultation services for the treatment of kala-azar patients.
  7. Investigation of samples received from various suspected Kala-azar outbreaks.

Toxoplasma Laboratory

  1. Provided diagnostic services to hospitals and dispensaries in Delhi.
  2. Maintenance of Rh strain of Toxoplasma gondii in Swiss albino mice.
  3. Preparation of antigen for all serological procedures.
  4. Consultation services for the treatment of Toxoplasmosis and follow-up of the patients
 
Unit 4 : Arbovirus Laboratory
 
Routine activities undertaken
  1. Serological & virological diagnosis of arboviral infections like JE, Dengue, WN and Chikungunya on samples received from all Delhi hospitals.
  2. Investigation on serum samples received from various outbreaks of JE and Dengue in the country.
  3. Standardization of laboratory techniques for use in serological diagnosis.
  4. Maintenance of the strains
 
Unit 5 : Anthrax Laboratory
 

Routine activities undertaken

  1. Bacteriological an Molecular diagnosis (in collaboration with Biotechnology Division) of Anthrax Bacilli in  suspected cases of  Anthrax from endemic area and   from environmental samples.
  2. Outbreak investigation

Unit 6 and 7 : Leptospira Laboratory & Brucella Laboratory
 

Routine activities undertaken

Leptospira Laboratory

  1. Diagnostic services.
  2. Investigation of the samples received from various outbreaks.
  3. Multicentric study on sero-surveillance of Leptospirosis

Brucella Laboratory

  1. Diagnostic services to all Hospitals in Delhi
  2. Sero-surveillance studies on a sampled population.
 
Unit 8 and 9 : Rabies Laboratory (WHO Collaborative Centre for Rabies) & Tissue Culture Laboratory
 

Routine activities undertaken

  1. Diagnostic services for suspected rabid animals and hydrophobia cases using appropriate laboratory techniques.
  2. Post-marketing sero surveillance of Tissue Culture anti rabies vaccinees.
  3. Sero conversion studies after pre and post-exposure treatment both in humans and animals.
  4. Consultation services for post-exposure antirabies treatment.
  5. Training of personnel in laboratory techniques for rabies.
  6. Development of guidelines

Unit 10 : Hydatid/Rickettsia Laboratory
 

Routine activities undertaken

  1. The laboratory deals with Rickettsia and Hydatid infections and provides diagnostic services to Hospitals in Delhi
  2. Diagnosis of Hydatid disease by serological tests.
  3. Serological diagnosis for Rickettsial Infections.
  4. Outbreak investigations
 
Unit 11 : Central Animal Facility
 
The animal housing facility at National Centre for Disease Control is spread over 1000 sq. mtr. Breeding facility maintains genetically undefined stock of mice, rabbits and sheep. In addition the institute is also maintained pigeons and geese.
